Heirloom Seeds Collection and Distribution Project
Story

We will collect heirloom vegetable and tree seeds, reproduce them in our farm and then distribute them to individual farmers and local interest groups. The request of many farmers is to grow crops using their own seeds that they are able to use over and over again and this could not be done by using hybrid seeds. Besides, hybrid seeds are expensive and could not be re-used as they will not produce good, quality crops anymore.

Impact

Farmers are getting resource-poor with the dependence of the use of hybrid seeds which are readily available in the market although expensive. The need to improve lives and livelihoods as well as the biodiversity of local areas are important and this can be done by reviving the adoption of heirloom seeds, or seeds that are passed down from generations.

Challenge

Small-scale, resource-poor farmers are at a serious disadvantage with the lack of seeds in order to grow their crops. There is a need to collect and produce heirloom seeds or seeds that farmers will be able to grow and use over and over again. They cannot do this with hybrid seeds and we need to source-out heirloom seeds because they are fast disappearing and hard to find. The government do not favor growing them.
