Super Typhoon Odette Food and Sanitation Project
Story
We will repair and install latrines damaged by Super Typhoon Rai/Odette in Dinagat Island and Surigao aside from the provision of food packs and gardening supplies. Right now there are thousands of coconut trees felled down by the typhoon and we will use this resource in order to build the latrines. Our goal is to prevent second wave of disaster caused by diseases. Our gardening initiative will help ensure continuity of local food supply.
Impact
The prevention of the spread of diseases is crucial in order to prevent a second wave of disaster and this can easily be done by the construction and or repair of latrines during a disaster. Mobilizing local resources is a sure winner in engaging local communities for resilience and mutual help.
Challenge
Our experience shows that the repair or construction of latrines is the last in the efforts of humanitarian aid after a major disaster like this recent Super Typhoon Rai. With this situation, the spread of diseases caused by open defecation is not far off and we want to prevent this. We will build or repair latrines one at a time and mostly using local resources such as downed coconut trees. We will also provide immediate food packs and gardening inputs in order to ensure food security.
