Mission

The American Foundation for Children with AIDS (AFCA) is a non-profit organization providing critical comprehensive services to infected and affected HIV+ children and their caregivers. Our programs are efficient, promoting self-reliance and sustainability. Since 2005, in collaboration with our in-country partners, we have served tens of thousands of families in some of the most underserved and marginalized communities in Africa. Our areas of impact include: medical support, livelihoods, educational support and emergency relief.

Let's keep girls in school

Women & Girls Empowerment
Health & Physical Wellbeing
Education & Technology
Uganda

A girl can miss up between 6-8 months of schooling every three years due to school days missed because she doesn't have sanitary pads to use. Leaves, paper, rocks, and rags is what she'll have to resort to if she doesn't have sanitary pads. Add to that the lack of school fees and you have the recipe for disaster. Together, we can help change that!

AFCA will provide small livestock (chickens, goats, pigs, or rabbits) to benefit children infected and/or affected by AIDS, as well a training needed to become self-sufficient as they raise flocks or herds for their own consumption and to sell. Large infrastructure help (boreholes, large hen runs, or rabbit homes) is also provided, when needed, in order to carry out these projects. Our aim is to make these children self-reliant and to be able to take care of themselves in the short and long run.

The indigenous tree nursery will provide saplings to seven schools in the Matabeleland South Province of Zimbabwe and various rural communities throughout the area. The fruits, honey, nuts, and bark from the trees will provide healthy food for the students and residents. Also, the schools and communities will use the trees to teach students and residents about the conservation of indigenous trees and sustainable harvesting. Our goal is that after five years the nursery will be self-sustaining.

Children affected/infected by AIDS have a difficult time attending school due to the fees due. Uniforms and supplies are needed, too. You can make a huge difference by paying for a year of school.

Our trio of programs work together to make change: Kidz Kan and She Kan are outreach programs to educate and empower children, adolescents, teachers and community members about sexual abuse, the law, the role of duty bearers, and the rights of women and girls. The He Kan program is a means to proactively prevent sexual abuse done to women and girls by educating boys on what constitutes sexual abuse, the effects that has on a person, responsibility, and holding other boys accountable.

Buy some goats and seeds for orphaned families in Congo and Zimbabwe - and improve a child's potential in life. Malnutrition is a serious and widespread problem both these countries, exacerbated by COVID19, and you can help fight it through the gift of goats and gardens and the training we provide beneficiaries. So simple, yet SO powerful!

Zimbabwe

Provide youth infected and/or affected by AIDS in Zimbabwe with whatever they need in order to continue their education, whether it be food, training, medicine, school fees, or supplies. We will be targeting over 200 children and youth, giving them the tools necessary to return or stay in school, knowing that sickness, hunger, lack of funds, lack of training, and other obstacles often will keep under privileged children out of school.

AFCA will set up 3 greenhouses for orphaned girls who were abused by their guardians. Girls will gain incredible skills for their future: set up the greenhouse, set up an irrigation system, mulch, grow seedlings, plant, fertilize, harvest, market, and sell produce. They also learn traditional field farming. With a little under half the proceeds going into their personal bank accounts, the girls have funds for the day they leave the orphanage! They leave with skills, a savings account and hope.

Sustainable Food Project for Children in Kenya

Hunger

Kenya

During this difficult time of drought, children in AFCA's programs have been affected. While we have helped keep them alive and healthy through the AIDS pandemic, it is tragic that hunger would take them. With our sustainable projects, we establish long-term solutions through community gardens, sisal production and training for the communities we serve. The specialized training is for HIV+ moms so they can provide food and other necessities for their families.

This project will provide 104 AIDS orphans and their guardians with training, livestock, seeds, and counsel so they may become self-reliant. These children have suffered through the death of their parents...they don't need to fear for their futures and how they will pay for food, rent, clothes or food. Through this project, these small orphaned families will receive the hand up they need to move forward.

Good, Decent Toilets for 49 families in Zimbabwe

Good, Decent Toilets for 49 families in Zimbabwe

Health & Physical Wellbeing
Zimbabwe

In the Matopos region of Zimbabwe, local volunteers identified 49 families infected or affected with HIV/AIDS who lack a toilet. This means that these families are defecating and urinating in the tall grasses or forests surrounding their homes. AFCA will build long drop toilets (loos) using recycled materials, providing the families with decent and safe toilets. A solar lamp will complete the package, allowing beneficiaries to use the facilities with the aid of a light.
