Peru

The vast, pristine forests of northern Peru are home to an incredible array of rare wildlife. But this spectacular diversity - along with the indigenous Cocama people that live there - are under serious threat due to intense climate fluctuations that cause severe, unpredictable floods and droughts. Working with the Cocama, Earthwatchers collect data on the health of the ecosystem to help improve their traditional hunting and fishing activities and to develop climate change mitigation strategies.

Canada

Only 5% of Canada's native grasslands remain, and they are filled with North America's iconic species: wolves, grizzlies, bighorn sheep, moose, bison, eagles and more. Park managers set controlled fires to attract grazers like elk that eat invasive species and keep the prairies from being overrun. But elk attract wolves, and wolves scare away elk. Help Earthwatch scientists better understand these chain reactions to ensure that a healthy, balanced ecosystem is maintained.

Killer Whales and Their Prey in Iceland

Climate Action
Iceland

Scientists have very little information about the population or feeding patterns of killer whales in Iceland. As top predators, they can change the populations of prey species, which in turn affects the rest of the food chain. Conversely, dependence on a particular prey species, whose populations may fluctuate over time, can impact the killer whales' survival. By collecting observational data and skin/blubber samples, scientists will be able to better understand and protect these killer whales.
