Mission

Inspired by Buddhist values, Karuna exists to end caste-based discrimination, poverty and inequality in India and Nepal. Our work with individuals focuses on education, dignified livelihoods and gender equality, transforming communities and changing society. Karuna believes: - Individual transformation is crucial for genuine social change - Authentic communication has the power to change lives - Every human should have the opportunity to fulfil their potential to grow and develop Karuna is a Triratna team-based Right Livelihood - a Buddhist ideal of working ethically and non-violently. We emphasise the importance of working and practicing together, striving to create positive change in oneself as well as others. This is echoed in our salary system, as each employee at Karuna, including our CEO, is paid on a needs basis and not according to seniority.

India

2021 saw the peak of the second wave of Covid-19 infections in India and Nepal, with recorded cases reaching more than 400,000 per day. Today the economic and social impact of lockdown continues to affect the most marginalized communities the most, who already live a precarious 'hand to mouth' existence. We address the needs of struggling communities and provide sustainable and impactful recovery aid. They will need your support for many years to come. Your donations can rebuild lives.

Dignity for Girls - Their right to safe periods.

Women & Girls Empowerment
Health & Physical Wellbeing
Nepal

During the practice of Chhaupadi, which is wide-spread in parts of Nepal, girls and women are regarded as 'impure' during their period. They are excluded from participating in socio-economic and school life, locked out of the house (sometimes sleeping in sheds), refused access to public areas, cannot eat certain foods and have no contact with men. This project decreases discriminatory practices surrounding periods, transforms assumptions and repairs the self-confidence of affected women.

Stop Violence Against Dalit Women in India

Women & Girls Empowerment
Health & Physical Wellbeing
India

This project works to empower Dalit and Tribal women's groups to come together to tackle issues of violence against women in India. 70% of Indian women are victims of domestic violence. Reported rapes increased to 33,707 in 2013. Many more cases go unreported and marital rape is not a criminal offence in India. Dalit and Adivasi women are particularly vulnerable to violence due to their low social and economic status.

Confidence is the key to escaping the poverty cycle of illiteracy, child-labour, child-marriage and ill-health that these girls are trapped in. This project provides the girls with the skills and confidence to engage in society and it challenges traditional views and stereotypes about gender roles.

We fund specialist workers to identify and intercept these women directly at the train station before they are approached and coerced by traffickers into a life of further abuse. They are taken to a safe place by workers where they receive practical, emotional, psychological rehabilitation & support

Women & Girls Empowerment
Health & Physical Wellbeing
India

Gender-based violence and discrimination against women and girls is widespread in India and exacerbated due to the effects of the COVID-19. In order to move towards greater gender equality, it's not enough just to work with women. Male attitudes also need to change so that men start to understand how greater gender equality might benefit them too. At the same time, it is necessary to help women and girls to build their skills and confidence so they can challenge discrimination and violence.
