Empower Smallholder Farmers Out of Poverty

This project will empower 800 smallholder farmers in most rural communities of the Eastern Province of Zambia with training in sustainable agriculture, farming inputs, and reliable markets for their produce. Our goal is to move 800 of these smallholder farmers from living in poverty into the middle-class status, enabling them to increase their income from the current $133 per hectare to $357 by the end of this project through the promotion of legume farming.

This project will supply 10,227 solar lamps in three villages of Eastern Zambia namely Mphamba, Tigone, and Kanyanga in Lumezi District. The solar lamps will enable 6,000 households to save up to $1,000,000 from kerosene purchases within a year of owning a solar lamp. It will enable children to study when the sun sets and improve their school performance to enable them to remain in school and reduce early marriages. Environmentally, The project will save more than 10,000 tonnes of CO2 emission.

It will enable girls to study when the sun sets and improve their school performance to enable them to remain in school and reduce early marriages. Environmentally, The project will save more than 20,000 tonnes of CO2 emission.

This projects funds a self-sustaining microfinance initiative issuing collateral-free, interest-bearing loans, for as little as $50, to poor women in rural Zambia to assist them in starting businesses, building assets, and gaining business skills so that they can generate income on a long-term basis, permanently improving their household living standards, and achieving financial independence for themselves and their families.
