Story

Since violence erupted in Rakhine State, Myanmar in August 2017, more than 900,000 vulnerable Rohingya people (including 500,000 children) have fled to the Cox's Bazar area of neighboring Bangladesh, now home to the world's largest refugee camp. Concern Worldwide provides lifesaving humanitarian assistance to tens of thousands of Rohingya refugees each year, including nutrition services, health center support, shelter and sanitation supplies, and disaster risk reduction.

Impact

While Concern's immediate focus is to respond to the most urgent needs of the Rohingya refugees, we always work with an eye towards sustainability. Through these activities - livelihood support, home gardening supplies and training, and disaster risk reduction - Concern is working to strengthen the resilience of Rohingya refugees so they can protect their families while retaining their dignity and hoping for productive lives in the future.

Challenge

The Rohingya, a stateless Muslim minority group, have faced years of persecution in Myanmar, where deep-seated tensions between them and the Buddhist majority have fueled conflict for decades. Since August 2017, Myanmar's army has brutally cracked down on the Rohingya, forcing over 900,000 people to flee for their lives. They are in makeshift refugee camps in Bangladesh and the government cannot handle the huge influx of people, many of whom arrive injured, malnourished, and with nothing.
