Build a Kitchen and a Dining Hall for 200 students
Story
Ikirwa School is building an English-medium school in a rural, under-served village community of Midawe. For most of our students Ikirwa School represents the only affordable local option to receive an excellent English-medium education and an opportunity to go on to high school and university. We have capacity for 200 students including 50 boarders. Yet kids still have their meals cooked in a shack over an open fire and eat them out in a shelter with plastic tarp walls. Help us change that!
Impact
We are a small school making a big difference in a rural community. Ikirwa School is the only option for English-language education in Midawe and nearby villages of Bangata and Ulonga, popl 6,000. Since 2013 we've grown from 30 to 110 students by building one classroom a year. We have capacity for 200 students including 40 boarders and will be graduating our first Primary class in 2019. Following construction of the Dining Hall and Kitchen we'll be well on our way to financial sustainability.
Challenge
English is the language of commerce in Tanzania, yet public education system uses Kiswahili to instruct primary grades and shifts to English afterwards. Due to poor command of English very few students go on to study beyond 7th grade, and fewer still go on to university. Rural children are at a further disadvantage due to lack of affordable private schools, which breach the language divide in large population centers. We aim to improve the odds of a better life for kids in one village.
