Caring for Cats: Neutering, Food and Shelter
Story
Our Caring for Cats project seeks to neuter, feed, and treat the sick and abandoned cats that come looking for a home here at our organization SINAL. Here in rural Brazil there are no animal shelters, meaning stray cats have nowhere to go and become hungry and sick without our care. Recently, 20 new kittens have arrived and we need to spay and neuter all 20, plus the stray mother and father cats nearby. In order to also feed all the cats and treat any of their sicknesses, we need support!
Impact
We hope to one day do community outreach in our local town of Santo Antonio on the topic of animal rights and the importance of spaying and neutering cats and dogs. There is a lack of access to education, especially on these issues, and we would like to promote proper treatment of animals. If we raise enough money, we could neuter and spay many of the animals in the community and work to decrease the stray cat problems in the town by finding them homes and preventing more unwanted births.
Challenge
In the part of rural Brazil where we are located, there are no animal shelters and most people do not spay or neuter their pets, meaning many cats and dogs are homeless on the streets with nowhere to go. Over time, many stray cats have made their way to our organization Sinal do Vale - an organic farm and reforestation project - as we care for people, nature, and animals. But we do not have the resources to take care of so many cats, especially as the strays often get sick and need treatment.
