Combating Food Insecurity in the Bolivian Andes
Story
The food security project addresses the climate change effects in Micani, rural Bolivia, by relying on two methods: First the implementation of micro-irrigation systems and solar tents to contribute to healthy and stable nutrition supply and through workshops where the population learns to apply sustainable agricultural practices independently. This will help to provide village schools, families and farmers of Micani permanent access to healthy food.
Impact
While equipping the school gardens with the micro-irrigation systems and building the solar tents is a short-term task, the long-term impact of the project lies in a change towards a sustainable agriculture. As climate change, rural migration and economic pressures increasingly reach even the most remote areas, this is an important intervention to ensure food security and well-being for Micani's population.
Challenge
Climate change poses unprecedented challenges to agriculture with devastating consequences for food security worldwide. In Micani, long periods of drought, sudden heavy rains and crop failures are already leading to precarious food situations and rural exodus. Therefore we want to lay the foundation for resilient food systems and sustainable agriculture with our "Food Security" project - in order to maintain the livelihood of the Bolivian rural population in the future.
