Connie's Home - A Group Foster Home for Children
Story
Connie's Home is a group foster home in northern Thailand providing care for children awaiting international adoption. Some 50 children have been adopted out over the life of the home. Food and diapers are among the highest expenses in operating a healthy home. We provide some of our food from an on-site Aquaponics project to help offset the cost of nutritious food. Salaries for our Thai staff, some who are former drug mules from the Juvenile Detention Center, are our greatest monthly expense.
Impact
By employing marginalized young women, including some who have served time in the Juvenile Detention Center for carrying drugs, we hope to demonstrate how to plan a family and provide loving care for children while being employed in a legal, healthy environment. We have trained over 50 of these young women over the past 20 years.
Challenge
Connie's Home was established to care for sick infants that are awaiting adoption. Often these children are set aside after being added to the adoption lists because their unaided health condition progresses and eventually results in being removed from the list, sometimes (rarely) due to death.
