Rescue 1 Million Meals with RLC
Story
If the pandemic proved one thing, it was that the food insecurity and food waste issue in the United States is worse than one expects. 1 in 7 households experienced food insecurity last year, including 1 in 6 children. Our mission and community have not diminished due to the pandemic - quite the opposite! By looking inward, improving our business model, and doubling our staff, RLC is entering 2022 with a renewed and empowered vision of spreading our mission further across the United States!
Impact
Hunger can be eliminated, because rescuing just 30% of wasted food is enough to feed all food insecure people in America, and we as a nation currently only recover about 3%. RLC provides a structure where anyone can join our mission and bring excess food to the hungry. Food security is the building block of a healthy and growing community, and RLC believes in a future where food rescue is the most widely used solution to hunger and food waste.
Challenge
40% of the food produced in the U.S. is wasted, but 1 in 7 households are food insecure. Food waste is one of the largest components of landfills, and contributes to methane gases, which are more harmful to the environment than CO2. The natural resources used to create wasted food, tax dollars used to subsidize food products, and energy expended to transport the food to our tables is wasted. Still, 46 million Americans are hungry, and more than half of the food pantries run out of food daily!
