Educate, Empower & Engage Teen Girls in Honduras
Story
Provides underprivileged adolescent girls and young women from at-risk communities in El Progreso with access to secondary education, leadership and life skills development opportunities and friendly spaces to engage with their peers. Educating and empowering adolescent girls and young women is crucial to breaking the cycle of poverty and building stronger, more resilient communities.
Impact
Empowered women create stronger, more resilient communities and societies. Investing in adolescent girls is the key to ensuring the sustainable development and transformation of Honduras. This project will contribute to the emergence of a new generation of educated and empowered young women who will act as agents of change in their homes, schools, communities and country.
Challenge
There are approximately 800,000 adolescents and youth in Honduras who neither work nor study. They are known as the NiNis, young people defined not by their potential but by their lack of opportunities. Beyond being trapped in the generational cycle of poverty, these young people are more vulnerable to risk factors present in their communities, including crime, violence, substance abuse, and initiation of risky sexual behaviors. Among all youth, adolescent girls are the most vulnerable.
