Story

Globalteer is a UK registered charity running a Child Protection Programme for children vulnerable to abduction, trafficking and sexual abuse in Cusco, Peru and Siem Reap, Cambodia. The Programme provides local teachers with knowledge and resources to teach children how to keep themselves safe outside of their classrooms. Empowering and educating children regarding self-safety will reduce the violence and risks that children in Cusco and Siem Reap are exposed to, benefiting the wider community.

Impact

By preparing children for the world that exists outside of the classroom walls, we will improve the quality of life for the next generation in Cusco, Siem Reap and eventually also in Colombia. Children will be safer and lead happier lives. Employing local teachers to educate children will make the teachers figureheads of child empowerment in the communities. We believe positive change is just around the corner and we have the responsibility to give children the thorough education they deserve.

Challenge

Children in Peru and Cambodia are vulnerable to abduction, abuse and trafficking. Parents work long hours and schools lack resources to educate children about real world dangers. According to UNICEF reports, more than 35% of adolescents in Peru have experienced sexual violence, and in Cambodia children were victims in more than 41% of sex-trafficking cases. Preventative matters of self-safety are not taught in Siem Reap or Cusco; therefore, the cycle of child vulnerability continues.
