End Child Labour in Southern Nepal
Story
Over 90 boys and girls as young as 6 years old currently work in brick factories in Rautahat, Southern Nepal, instead of going to school. This project will ensure the children will receive a good quality education and no longer work in the factories. Their families will be supported so they don't suffer financially as a result of their children attending school. Once all 90 children are helped, we will replicate the project in neighbouring villages where the need is equally large.
Impact
We will ensure that none of the 90 children go back to work but that they all receive education. We will work on changing the attitudes to child labour in the district and we will liaise with all the brick factories to stop the practice of employing children. Our partner schools are happy to accept children from the lowest castes and hence we will ensure that the common discrimination against our children never happens again. We will aim to help all children that are working at brick factories.
Challenge
There are 162 brick factories in Rautahat. We investigated 6 and we found more than 90 young children working there. Most of the factories tend to follow the same practices so we estimate the number of child labour cases to be in excess of 2500. The owners of the largest factories are also involved in politics and they have a lot of influence over the local communities - hence child labour is treated as something normal. The children from the Dalit castes are discriminated against at schools
