Story

The recent environmental crises around the world have stopped us all in our tracks; while there is a lot being done to provide immediate relief, we are asking ourselves what can we do at an individual, organizational and community level to make a difference. What action can we take to ensure such catastrophes do not repeat themselves? Inspired by Greta Thunberg, we asked ourselves, what if students could take action while they were still at school? Will the future generation be better equipped?

Impact

Learning about and looking after the environment will become a normal part of student education. This will continue to have an impact as children complete school and start working in various professions; they will continue to care for the environment in whichever walk of life they choose and ensure that their work always has a positive impact on Mother Nature. By the completion of this project we will have planted at least 100,000 trees and conducted 100 tree planting workshops across Kisumu.

Challenge

Kisumu County has a forest cover of 0.44%; this is one of the lowest in Kenya. Poor forest cover inevitably strains the local ecosystem, leads to poor rainfall and has cascading effects on daily life. It adversely affects harvest, food supply chains, subsequently making basic food expensive. We often see this impact in schools where students cannot access daily meals which consequently leads to poor attendance. We continue to be in this cycle when we don't know how to look after our environment.
