Expanding Climate-Positive Sanitation in Haiti
Story
Since 2006, SOIL has been expanding access to safe, affordable, and restorative sanitation services in some of Haiti's most vulnerable communities. By producing organic, agriculture-grade compost from safely-treated human waste, SOIL is transforming a devastating public health crisis into a climate-positive solution for a more resilient future.
Impact
SOIL's provides safe sanitation services to over 6,000 people and produces 80+ tons of organic compost annually. As we expand, SOIL is on its way to reach 15% of the city of Cap-Haitien with sanitation and generate 800+ metric tons of compost by 2025. Our ultimate goal is to revolutionize the approach to urban sanitation, proving a scalable and replicable model to provide earth-restoring sanitation access for the 700+ million people living in urban communities who currently lack access.
Challenge
Only 34% of families living in urban Haiti have access to improved sanitation. As a result, Haiti has the highest rate of childhood diarrhea in the world and is battling one of the largest cholera epidemics in modern history. As water sources are polluted from human waste, soil nutrients are declining rapidly, contributing to malnutrition. In Haiti, the cycle of poor sanitation, environmental degradation, and poverty are devastating for communities and the environment alike.
