Fight Malnutrition in Rural Guatemala
Story
This project will increase the nutritional intake of Tzu'tujil Mayan families by introducing a comprehensive nutrition, cooking, and garden program focusing on easily grown, nutrient dense foods.
Impact
The project will educate over 200 mothers, grandmothers, caregivers and community leaders on sanitary food practices and basic nutrition. This will be coupled with a garden program producing free organic, nutritious food in their own yard. This program has the potential to combat stunting, under-nutrition, over-nutrition and related conditions like type 2 diabetes, heart disease and infant mortality.
Challenge
Poor nutrition and hygiene knowledge coupled with poverty and illiteracy has resulted in chronic malnutrition and stunting in the highlands of Guatemala. Aldea Maya will teach basic nutrition and cooking classes in both Spanish and Tzu'tijil to care givers and community leaders. The participants will return home with increased awareness, new skills and a chaya, banana, papaya or citrus tree to plant.
