Free education for 60 deprived children in Peru
Story
Picaflor House is a community project in the village of Oropesa, in a deprived area of the Peruvian Andes near Cusco. Although millions of tourist dollars flood into Peru every year very little reaches remote villages of the region. Here, the poorest children would normally be destined for a lifetime of poverty and hardship. While villagers work hard to feed and clothe their children, we provide a safe space for children to play and free education to help them break out of the cycle of poverty.
Impact
Picaflor House has been working with the children of Oropesa and their families since 2010. Parents have already seen improvements in the school grades, health and confidence of their children. The chances of a better long term future are already much more realistic and as we continue and expand our work in Oropesa the positive impact will touch even more families. The children of Picaflor House will be able to contribute fully to their families and the rest of the community for years to come.
Challenge
Despite Peru being a tourist magnet, millions of Peruvians live in extreme poverty, particularly outside major cities like Lima and Cusco. In Oropesa many homes are shared with livestock, have no running water or proper sanitation and heating is unheard of. Education is the only way to give the children of Oropesa hope for a better future, but poverty, malnutrition, poor health and low literacy amongst parents all severely impact on the educational achievements of Oropesa's children.
