Fund a teacher and teach a class in Latin America
Story
A good teacher can be one of the most inspiring people. Here at Fly the Phoenix we are very aware of this and only employ the best local teachers who have trained well and are really passionate about their work. Schools often fail in Latin America because the teachers are of low quality. Due to COVID-19 we aim to provide hand sanitizer and supplies of soap over the long-term for all our students for when they enter and leave the schools each day to reassure parents that it is a safe environment
Impact
Our teachers represent all that is good about education. These teachers inspire the children to learn, grow and become teachers or other professionals themselves. Over time we want to hand these projects over to the communities, into the hands of these teachers and future teachers to run by themselves; this can only be done by the best. We are also using sustainable plans to ensure that the projects are funded internally for years to come, not through external donations.
Challenge
Around 60% of children who start primary school actually finish in Latin America and this figure rises as you get to more rural areas. One reason for this is schools being too far to travel to and when the children arrive they are greeted by bad teachers, dated teaching methods and no-one who speaks their mother-tongue (Spanish is their second language). A lack of understanding of the need for education teamed with bad resources means more indigenous children shy away from school.
