Story

This project will fund the summer school term at The School of Hope. During the academic school year, The School of Hope provides quality access to an education, healthy nutrition, clean water, medical care, and psychological support to more than 600 students and their families. This summer term will be critical in order for our students to catch up academically and prepare for the next phase of their education. From September 12-16, Global Giving will match 50% of every donation up to $50.

Impact

We will be able to provide the nutrition, medical care, and mental heath support necessary so that our 600+ students can continue receiving a quality education to ensure that they have the skills necessary to break the cycle of poverty for themselves and their families. We know that students who are sick, hungry, anemic, dehydrated, or experience psychological distress simply can't be successful at school, which is why we are currently focusing so heavily on health and nutrition.

Challenge

Schools were closed for nearly 2 years in Guatemala and classes were completed via distance learning. This was especially difficult for our students who are from a low socioeconomic status as they had limited access to electricity and internet connection. Additionally, our students often faced pressure to work to support their families. This means that now our students are working against an even greater disadvantage in comparison to their peers. Many are not at grade level in literacy and math.
