Give Clean Water to Kids in Ethiopia
Story
The capital city of Ethiopia, Addis Ababa, is one of the fastest growing cities in the world. More than 374,000 poor children attend government-funded schools in Addis, where the water and sanitation conditions are appalling. Only 6% of schools have reliable access to water, 35% have useable toilets, and of schools that had taps for handwashing, only 66% worked. Soap is present for handwashing in just 10% of schools. Splash's goal is to ensure every school in Addis has safe water always.
Impact
Clean water, hygiene education, and sanitation solutions at every single public school in Addis Ababa by 2023--benefiting more than 370,000 kids, plus their teachers and communities. That's 370,000 kids who will not miss school days, play days, or any other days because of water-born illnesses! Safe water and sanitation will help thousands of kids grow up healthy so that they may reach their full potential like they deserve.
Challenge
Rapid urban growth always comes with challenges, challenges that most directly affect the poor--and especially kids. It is estimated that over 80% of Addis' population lives in slum districts with low quality infrastructure and very limited access to safe drinking water and clean toilets. Water scarcity and poor sanitation are a daily threat to the health and development of the 400,000 children attending Addis Ababa's public schoools.
