Healthy and Happy: children's food security in RDC
Story
Aleimar and AMKA want to promote the right to food for children suffering or at risk of malnutrition in the areas of Mabaya and Sambwa (in the province of Lubumbashi). Aleimar and AMKA also want to raise awareness in the entire community in relation to correct nutrition and hygiene practices, prevent child diseases in order to reduce their mortality rates and help mothers taking good pre and post-natal care of their children.
Impact
The project wants to reduce by 30% child mortality in the areas of Mabaya and Sambwa in three years and to improve the health of children, their mothers and of the whole community through better assistance services and meeting aimed to increase awareness of good health practices.
Challenge
The Democratic Republic of Congo is one of the poorest countries in the world, where the high rate of child and maternal mortality is caused mainly by food scarcity, wrong food habits, bad hygienic and sanitary conditions, which increase the spread of infective diseases. Moreover, high female illiteracy rates are strongly related to the risk of child malnutrition: mother's education can indeed improve pre and postnatal care.
