Empower a Girl in Guatemala: Education after COVID
Story
With the experience of an educational project that has been running for many years, at FUNDAP we implement the initiative 'Scholarships for Girls'. We encourage girls in rural Guatemala to continue their education, now more at risk than ever, because since March 2020 schools have been closed. Lack of means and family difficulties are the main problems they face. With this campaign we want to empower 350 girls, for three years, to complete their high school education.
Impact
FUNDAP is certain that: 1) Women with higher levels of education obtain higher incomes and economic independence; 2) In addition, they increase their capacity to act and empower themselves to get involved in family and community decisions; 3) Each additional year of schooling that girls have, delays early marriages and pregnancies; 4) The more years of schooling, the lower the chances of malnutrition and increase the chances of food security and family welfare.
Challenge
Rural girls in Guatemala have fewer opportunities to complete school and, for most of them, the long school closing may be the end of their education. Half of those who start primary school complete it, and only 1 out of 3 manage to complete 9th grade. 64% are over-aged and 43% are severely over-aged, at risk of dropping out of the school system for good. That is why, for at least three years, we reinforce activities, monitor permanence, sensitize families, and provide them with financial aid.
