Story

At Backup Uganda, we focus on giving learners the attention and instruction that best suit their learning needs. In Uganda, it is not yet a priority to meet the needs of learners with learning difficulties. With class sizes upwards of 70 children, struggling learners are overlooked and pushed along in their education. We empower their teachers and parents to identify their difficulties and work with them in order to prevent dropping out of school or getting lost in the system.

Impact

This project is set up to become a standard structure within all schools in Uganda. At the moment, the Ugandan education system has no regulated support for children with learning difficulties. While many nonprofits invest huge amounts of money in schools in Uganda, they neglect to focus on the quality of instruction in the classrooms. Once our movement is adapted in schools nation-wide, learners of all varieties will experience the successes they deserve and reach their fullest potential.

Challenge

Being able to attend school in Uganda is an achievement alone; families put in all their efforts to ensure their children are in school. However, that does not mean all children are actually learning. Due to a lack of awareness of learning difficulties, learners are mislabeled as dull, lazy, or slow. Lessons are teacher-driven and instruction is not differentiated for the various types of learners. This causes children to repeat classes multiple times, be pushed to the next grade, or drop out.
