Help Improve Hygiene of Afghan Street Children
Story

A quarter of kids between the ages of 5 to 14 in Afghanistan suffer child labor - a hazard to their health and well being. Due to poverty and low awareness, hygiene practices are not part of their daily life and therefore, prone to variety of diseases including COVID-19. Awareness raising and supply of basic hygiene materials is the solution. CPD aims to identify street children in districts 9, 10 and 16 of Kabul city and disseminate basic hygiene information and materials for their protection.

Impact

Children receiving basic hygiene information and materials will be encouraged to consider hygiene in their daily life and stay safe from variety of diseases including COVID-19 as well as enjoying a better nutritious condition. Information will also be shared by underserved children to their family members and friends that will help strengthen primary health care (PHC) system. Daycare center for street children - as a long-term goal - will also include basic literacy and numeracy classes.

Challenge

A quarter of kids between the ages of 5 to 14 in Afghanistan suffer child labor - a hazard to their health and well-being. The main reason kids work is to help their families survive economically and bring food to the table. Due to poverty and low awareness, hygiene practices are not part of their daily life and therefore, prone to variety of diseases including COVID-19. Children work in many dangerous jobs such as garbage picking, porters, street vendors, beggary, carpet industry and etc.
