Help unemployed Thai with IT work-study program
Story
DigiServe IT Academy Plus provides an 18-month work-study and apprenticeship program for unemployed adults (due to Covid) who desire to start a new career in IT. They are taught web development and life skills in order to prepare them to enter the IT industry and succeed. The program is designed so that they learn alongside experienced professionals through hands-on projects that support other non-profit organizations (the mission of DigiServe)
Impact
After training, professional experience, and a portfolio of projects, students will be prepared for a new career in IT and will have helped other non-profits use IT to improve their ability to serve others. Prepared for long-term success, they will help bring economic growth as well as benefiting society through future volunteer services with family and community-oriented non-profits.
Challenge
With the economy suffering due to the Covid pandemic and people losing their jobs especially in the tourism business, many hard-working Thai people are forced to find a new occupation. The ever-growing IT industry seems out of reach because businesses will not generally hire people without IT degrees. In addition, while there are many resources (most in English) to help people learn skills online, just taking some basic classes will not be enough to convince businesses to hire them.
