Help Youth Stay in School and Grow Academically
Story
This project will provide guidance and support to at-risk youth to ensure school retention and academic progress. Due to the effects of the pandemic, Puerto Rico's students are less motivated than ever and need an encouraging environment. Caney (Centro de Apoyo Academico y Espacio Seguro) are academic centers offered in schools to foster a safe space for students and other at-risk youth in San Juan, Naguabo, Juncos, and Canovanas.
Impact
This project will ensure Caney can offer a safe space for students and provide academic support. It will help Puerto Rico's at-risk youth population stay in school long-term thus reducing the dropout rate. Students will feel encouraged to improve their grades, pass each school year and receive a diploma. Graduating high school offers a better life outcome for at-risk youth and benefits our society as a whole.
Challenge
Puerto Rican youth who drop out of school often have lower levels of income and poorer life outcomes compared to those who stay in school. At-risk youth have suffered greatly from school closure due the pandemic and remote learning. Students are less motivated to stay in school and perform academically. In addition to academic decline, our youth suffer mental, physical and emotional effects. This project will help at-risk youth in schools receive support from our Caney academic centers.
