Hot lunches for 500 Cambodian children and youth
Story
M'Lop Tapang works with disadvantaged children and families. We believe that education is a way to break a family cycle of poverty and to do this we provide a variety of education and training programs. We know it's hard to study if you are hungry and so we make free hot meals available to more than 500 Cambodian children and youth as part of their regular school day. These meals are not fancy, but they are healthy and filling and often the only nutritious meal a child gets on a regular basis
Impact
In the short term, the immediate impact is feeding hungry children and youth. The long term impact is supporting these young people to get into school and stay there, whilst supporting them and their families with other safe individualized services. With a proper education they are on the road to a brighter future than the one they have now. With the right support, these children and youth can, in the future, become responsible adults as well as positive, independent members of society.
Challenge
Almost a third of Cambodia's population lives below the poverty line, mostly in the countryside. Many of the rural poor migrate to the cities in search of a better life, following the lure of the growing tourism and port activities in Sihanoukville. Sadly, without any marketable skills, many of these people have little chance of safe employment and the result is the continual expansion of slums and growing numbers of street children and youth
