Inclusion for Special Needs Children in Ecuador
Story
Fighting a stigma against special needs in Ecuador, the NOVA Education Center is working to promote an inclusionary education model. NOVA brings 95 children with special needs and normal children into the same classroom. This project works to promote diversity, respect, and community involvement. By sponsoring a child at NOVA you can ensure that children with special needs and children who can't afford education are given the opportunity to learn and grow, while promoting a culture of diversity.
Impact
In the long-term, NOVA is ensuring that Ecuador is a country that promotes values of diversity and respect towards all persons. Each year 95 children are directly impacted, receiving a quality education while also learning deep lessons of integration and how to help others. NOVA is a special place where the community unites to celebrate our differences and support persons from all walks of life.
Challenge
Children with special needs do not have many opportunities in Ecuador. They rarely do not graduate high school and do not have access to alternative technical training. Furthermore, Ecuadorian society is not aware of how to integrate individuals with special needs. This means that, more often than not, children are not very involved in activities, education, and work opportunities outside their homes, and that their Ecuadorian brothers and sisters do not know how to promote inclusion.
