It's Hard to Learn When You're Hungry!
Story
Mrs. Sianga and her dedicated team love and care for more than 500 vulnerable children, more than half of them orphans, giving them an excellent education and helping them grow in maturity, self esteem and confidence. It is a wonderfully inspiring special place. Many of the children come to school hungry and feeding them is an urgent challenge. Currently they are also facing the challenges of Covid-19 which is pushing food prices up and many classes are closed in lockdown.
Impact
Many of the children have lost one or both parents and the health of a parent or guardian is often poor. We get some idea of the poverty when we realise that a school meal or free uniform is a great attraction to the children. Some of the children even save some of their meal to take home to feed hungry brothers and sisters. To have children who reach their potential at school helps to ensure that the poverty cycle will be effectively broken.
Challenge
Poor people depend on what they can grow themselves, and almost no rainfall in 2019/20 was a disaster! Many children live just with distant relatives, and those who get to school come hungry - so we are feeding as many as possible a nutritious school meal and during lockdown providing supplements. Although primary education is free, children are expected to buy uniform, have shoes, buy notebooks etc.. Many families cannot afford these. PIZZ provides a lot more than just an academic education.
