Let's Enroll Street Kids for Nigeria's better future!
Story
The Almajiri Skills Acquisition Programme (ASAP), is a 12-month sustainable accelerated opportunity for Almajiri youth between the ages of 15 and 24. The programme is done in 2 phases. Phase I focuses on basic literacy, numeracy and career counselling needed for vocational skills careers. Phase II focuses mainly on the apprenticeship and acquisition of their vocational skills of choice, such as catering, tailoring, cosmetics and make-up, GSM repairs, barbing, aluminum work, etc.
Impact
Improved literacy and numeracy, business establishment, poverty reduction, increased economic growth and human capital development
Challenge
Northern Nigeria is home to over 13 million out school children. A considerable number of them are children enrolled in an alternative school system referred to as the Almajiri system. Many of these children are victims of developmental neglect and marginalization at different levels of leadership. Most of them end up with street begging for survival or engaged in menial jobs with low-paying unskilled labour, while others become victims of opportunistic politicians, criminals, and gangs.
