Story

Our mission is to improve the living conditions of underprivileged indigenous populations in the Sierra Tarahumara, northern Mexico. Indigenous population in the Sierra do not have access to water, electricity nor basic services. We provide families with the supplies to build a rainwater collection system, and train them so that they acquire the technical abilities to install and maintain their own system. We empower them to be responsible for their access to water and improve their health.

Impact

Meet Maria. She lives in the Sierra Tarahumara in Chihuahua Mexico, in an indigenous community with other 4 families. She is 8, and now, since her family has clean water from the rainwater recollection system, she does not need to walk and carry heavy buckets of water every day for hours. Now, she can go to school. Now, her younger baby sister is not sick anymore. Her mother is now able to make traditional crafts and trade them. Families become self-sufficient and empowered.

Challenge

The indigenous people in the Sierra are particularly vulnerable regarding water access and constantly living a water crisis. Because of the geographical layout and the distances between communities, the government and water agencies have not yet connected the Sierra with hydraulic system, as we know it in cities and urban communities. The effects of water scarcity has repercusion in 4 problem areas: Health, Hunger, Education, and Poverty.
