Make Christmas special for DRC street children
Story
We like Christmas to be special for all the children we support at Kimbilio. Each year we have a special party. We make sure all the children get a present. For children who have been living on the streets an event like this is a big deal & being offered a present rather than begging on the streets means a lot. This year we opened a Primary School for over 150 former street children & children whose families can't afford to send them to school. We'd like them to have a party & present too.
Impact
This will enable these children to feel special and that they belong. It's important that they have a sense of belonging to the Kimbilio family. This will help them to feel engaged in their education and within the life of the local community and be less likely to become involved in militia activity which targets those who are isolated and not engaged and valued within their local communities.
Challenge
Due to high level of poverty in Congo, for the majority of the population, it's not possible to buy presents and have a big feast. For the children we work with who have been living a hand to mouth existence on the streets we want them to know that they matter. Each year we have a party and a special meal and they all get a present. This year we've opened a primary school for former street children and the numbers have doubled! We'd love them all to have a special Christmas this year.
