Menstrual and sexual education workshops
Story

Our project is based on the organization of menstrual and sexual education workshops in the shantytown of Tocaimita located in the suburbs of Bogota. This poor neighborhood has many women, mostly indigenous, in a situation of economic vulnerability. We wish to accompany them in their learning of their body and in the discovery of the options which are at their disposal. The courses will be given by women who are used to this kind of workshop: psychologists, activists, association leaders.

Impact

Our project is respectful of the human body and the environment. Tampons can be dangerous for health and cause toxic shocks to users, because of the chemicals contained in the cotton. The menstrual cup is not dangerous and should simply be boiled after each use. We promote the use of menstrual cups because we believe that it is the healthiest and most respectful hygienic protection for the planet: a menstrual cup can be kept for 10 years and its use does not generate any waste !

Challenge

In Colombia, the teenage fertility rate is 58.8 births per 1000 women aged 15-19. The poorest women, with low levels of education and no economic resources, are the most vulnerable to childbearing and gender-based violence. In 2018, 7,453 girls aged 10-14 years and 220,868 adolescents aged 15-19 years were mothers. In our opinion, the respect of sexual and reproductive rights is a pillar for the fulfillment of other rights that many women in Colombia are currently denied.
