Muslim American Journeys
Story
"Muslim American Journeys: In, Out, and Through," spotlights a unique collection of personal stories of American Muslims, focused in particular on their complex identities, challenges, and triumphs. Recorded in partnership with StoryCorps, we provide a platform for Americans of Muslim heritage to share their individual stories. Every story recorded is officially archived in the Library of Congress, and outstanding stories are featured on National Public Radio (NPR).
Impact
Measurable results can be utilized for research to collect, preserve, exhibit, interpret stories & their unique histories. Cultural heritage consists of tangible and intangible, natural and cultural, movable and immovable assets inherited from the past. It is of extremely high value for the present and the future of a country. Personal stories are essential to mitigate deterioration of multifaceted identities, and prolong the useful value of the power of belonging.
Challenge
Personal stories can be a powerful catalyst for change. MALA provides a platform for Americans of Muslim heritage to share diverse narratives that recognizes individuality. In a country as diverse and complex as the USA, the histories of Muslim Americans remains layered and contested. The articulation of those stories can significantly contribute to benefit American society by celebrating, challenging, and re- defining a community identity.
