Nepal Earthquake : Support for remote communities
Story
Last year, a powerful earthquake caused devastation in many areas of Nepal. Remote regions, such as Gorkha and Sindhulpalchok, were among the worst-affected, with some people losing everything. PHASE had been working in these areas for many years, and within days was coordinating an emergency response to hand out relief and keep essential services running. Now, PHASE is supporting permanent rebuilding and long term recovery of these communities so they can again become self-sustainable.
Impact
As well as addressing immediate needs, PHASE plan to stay in these communities in the long term to ensure that the infrastructure and services meet the needs of the local people. Using earthquake-resistant building techniques and focusing on livelihood development are both strategies to increase disaster resilience for the future.
Challenge
The April 2015 earthquake caused unimaginable devastation. Two of the most affected areas were Gorkha (where PHASE have worked since 2009) and Sindhulpalchok (where PHASE have worked since 2006). Many people lost everything; homes, livelihoods and family members. In the aftermath, PHASE offered emergency relief and support for essential services, but with most people still living in temporary shelters, is still much work to be done in rebuilding communities and lives.
