Story

The social and physical environment within Palestinian camps continues to deteriorate (overcrowding, lack of green spaces, and poor living conditions,). Jafra will improve the lives of refugees by supporting organic rooftop gardening for food security and enhanced livelihoods via small production initiatives, fostering a sense of community belonging, beautification and improved air quality which will help to restore a damaged environment and in turn alleviate stress and local anxieties.

Impact

Refugees will have greater access to food security and nutrients, as well as the chance for small business development which will increase their overall household income and quality of life.Rooftop gardening will not only make the camp a more livable urban space, but it will also restore the damaged environment, improve air quality hence reducing stress levels within the camp. Sustainability is ensured through the transfer of skills where rooftop gardening can become a wide practice in the camps

Challenge

Across Lebanon,Palestinian refugees reside in 12 camps and 42 informal gatherings. The camps are congested urban ghettos, cut off from the rest of city dwellers by concrete blocks to buttress security.Inside the camps, poverty rates have risen by 23% in 2015,compared to 8% at the beginning of the Syria crisis. At present, 90% of Palestinian refugees live below Lebanon's poverty line of US$3.8 a day.Resilience capacities need to be strengthened and camp conditions improved for Palestinian refugees.
