Plant 10,000 Trees to Reduce Carbon Footprints
Story
Seva Mandir is working to restore degraded Aravalli hills in south Rajasthan. Till now, we have planted more than 2 million plants in the area which is drought prone and experience irregular rainfall. Through this project, we aim to plant 10,000 plants in this area which will restore local ecology and will also benefit local people with food, fuel and fodder. The local community will ensure survival of the plants making the project sustainable.
Impact
The developed green lands will improve ecology and water table. Local communities will get fodder, fuel wood and fruits from the plantation. Direct involvement in the plantation will create ownership of the local community for future maintenance & ensuring long term sustainability. A big long-term impact is creation of inclusive community with people from different caste, religion & gender coming on one platform leading to solidarity & making its way to further development in their villages.
Challenge
South Rajasthan is prone to droughts & irregular rainfall. The dry & barren landscape lacks vegetation leading to high levels of water run-off & soil erosion. Therefore, the area has become highly degraded & ecologically vulnerable. Also, the lack of greenery forces local communities to purchase fodder from outside at high prices. Hence there is an urgent need for plantation to improve ecological condition & to benefit the local communities through generation of fodder, fuel wood & fruits.
