Prepare Bulgarian Kids for the Jobs of the Future
Story
Telerik Academy School provides free education in programming and digital science, helping students aged 7-18 develop key digital competencies and knowledge and become bold inventors, digital leaders and sought-after professionals. Our aim is not to turn all kids into developers, but to teach them creative thinking and problem-solving skills and prepare them for the jobs of the future. For 10 years we've taught 12,000 BG kids how to code. Our goal is to train 12,000 more kids by the end of 2024.
Impact
The language of business is English, but innovations are written in code. If we want to set Bulgaria on a successful innovating trajectory, investing in the digital skills of the next generations is our only option. Over 14,500 kids in Bulgaria have participated in Telerik Academy School's free programs to date. 2000+ students from 33 cities joined our programs in the 2020/21 school year alone. By the end of 2024, we aim to teach another 12,000 students, reaching 35+ Bulgarian cities.
Challenge
In the next few years, 95% of all jobs will require digital literacy. Only 29% of Bulgarians currently have digital skills. There is a looming gap in education programs that could prepare today's youth for the jobs of the future. In addition, 90% of tech companies are concentrated in Sofia and Bulgaria's economic power is centered in a few major cities. The migration to these regions and abroad is stripping off ~2/3 of the country of its young population and deteriorating the local economies.
