Protecting Elephants
Story
Every year, tens of thousands of elephants are slaughtered for their tusks. DSWF adopts a holistic approach to conservation, working at all levels of the illegal wildlife chain, engaging in the international policy arena and funding ground-based conservation projects to ensure the greatest level of protection for elephants in their natural habitat.
Impact
Elephants are one of the most vulnerable mammals on the planet and DSWF is committed to addressing the threats facing this iconic species. By adopting a holistic approach to conservation which tackles wildlife crime, protects elephants and engages with local communities, we continue our 35 year legacy to protect elephants in their natural habitat.
Challenge
In the last forty years, African elephant populations have declined by over 70% as a result of the illegal wildlife trade, habitat loss and human-wildlife conflict. Today, as few as 450,000 elephants remain across Africa and Asia and it is more important than ever to protect this iconic species before its too late.
