Lift up cyclone-devastated families in Mozambique
Story
Peace Winds Japan (PWJ), in collaboration with local partners, has been constructing water supply systems and wells at resettlement areas to provide safe water to the people affected by Cyclones Idai in 2019 and Eloise in 2021. Other activities include emergency distributions such as food items and other non-food items, and hygiene promotions.
Impact
Post-disaster recovery is a long and arduous journey for most victims. The current water infrastructure cannot support the needs of the thousands of victims in need of access to safe water. The solar-powered water supply systems and hand wells will provide for the needs of these victims - they shouldn't have to worry about safe water in the midst of rebuilding their lives. The water management committees oversee the maintenance of their own supply systems, thus ensuring sustainability.
Challenge
Floods and high winds from Cyclone Idai destroyed thousands of buildings including homes, schools, and clinics causing an estimated USD 770 million in damages. As a result, an estimated 400,000 victims were displaced from their homes. Moving into the recovery phase, the victims need access to safe water to meet their daily needs.
