Story

The project aims to install a photovoltaic system in the village of Balou, in order to provide enough electricity to the Balou Center, which assists 200 children and young people who, because of their physical and mental disability, have been abandoned by their families. The interconnected modules plant will be installed on the structures of the center (dormitory, primary school, hospital, canteen,...) and will guarantee energy and light for psycho-health, social and educational activities.

Impact

The photovoltaic system will be able to provide energy and light to the entire Center and will reduce the high costs for the purchase of fuel, making the structure autonomous in terms of energy supply. In line with economic sustainability, the project will promote the use of renewable energy sources: the choice of photovoltaic panels will contribute to the reduction of tree deforestation for the production of coal that is currently the only source of energy available in Congo.

Challenge

In Congo the disability is perceived as a fatality for the family and the community. The Center wants to give a chance to all the disabled children that, considered dangerous for the community, have been abandoned to themselves. However, the Center must solve an urgent problem: the supply of energy. In Balou, the electricity grid is available for less than an hour a day and, since the old generator has recently failed, the Center is experiencing significant operational problems.
