Healthcare to Save Mothers and Babies
Story
There is no healthcare in the rural villages of Darfur, Sudan. Mothers give birth with help only from the Traditional Birth Attenders who are not trained, & have no equipment. Kids for Kids has trained two midwives for each of our 110 villages, saving the lives of countless mothers and babies; ensuring safe practices during pregnancy, childbirth, & postpartum. This project aims to raise funds to train new midwives for additional villages.
Impact
Long-term impact of training midwives includes reduction in the deaths of mothers in childbirth through modern birth techniques, early referral of problem cases, and better spacing of births. Infants and young children will be healthier, better nourished and immunized against killer diseases. In an emergency, women will be quickly transported to hospital in the capital. Midwives teach mothers about childcare, ensuring children are given the best change of survival.
Challenge
Mortality amongst women and babies in villages in Darfur is the amongst highest in the world. There is no healthcare in villages and women have to rely on Traditional Birth Attenders who use 'rope delivery' when there is obstructed labour. They have had no training even in basic hygiene. Female genital mutilation is a common practice in Darfur, and obstruction often prevents natural birth.
