Story

About 700,000 Rohingya refugees crossed into Bangladesh to escape persecution in Mynamar in August 2017 and are living in tents without food, clean water or health care. OBAT implemented a relief program in October 2017 to assist the Rohingya refugees with their immediate needs. The program initially focused on providing relief items and immediate medical care. Presently, it addresses the crisis through two key areas- health and education.

Impact

The Rohingya community will be able to overcome the initial barriers faced by a refugee who is bereft of all resources in a new country. The access to healthcare & education will stabilize their lives & improve their mental and physical well being, enabling them to focus their efforts on making a living until they find a permanent home. The trauma they have endured during their persecution & migration will never go away altogether but its effects will be diminished by the support they receive.

Challenge

The Rohingya crises has reached unimaginable proportions, with the crimes against this ethnic minority in Burma/Mynamar, surmounting others in the extent of their brutality. As this population seeks refuge in camps in Bangladesh, it needs immense help for basic needs. Since August 25th, 2017, about 700,000 refugees have crossed into Bangladesh. Sixty percent of this group consists of young children and many of these children are orphans.
