Say Yes to Women's Education of Oaxaca, Mexico.
Story
For 25 years we have been helping young women from indigenous, Afro-Mexican and rural communities in Oaxaca, Mexico, have access to high school level and university level education. With this project, we will continue to provide scholarships and virtual training to 25 young people in high school studies in the 2021-2022 school year. This requires a budget of $48,000 US per school year. Education is a vital investment for the future.
Impact
The beneficiaries of the Fondo Guadalupe Musalem come from small communities, 2,500 inhabitants or less. They are an important example for other young women from their villages. With the education they are able to receive from our program, they continue to conduct and implement activities that assist others in their community and contribute to the common good.
Challenge
In Oaxaca, Mexico, the indigenous population is 65.7% of the total. There is a 29% illiteracy rate for 15 year old women (and older), while men of the same age range have a rate of 16.4 %. In the indigenous and rural communities of the state, there are very few opportunities for girls and young women to have access to upper secondary and higher education.
