Scholarships to Live Dreams and Move Forward
Story
This project helps students and their families affected by the disaster pursue their education at Sendai YMCA College. Without these scholarships the student's families would not have the resources for them to pursue their chosen hotelier career. Tohoku youth will lead the recovery of Tohoku and this initiative helps train future leaders of the area's tourism industry. The program also provides English conversation lessons, volunteer, leadership and exchange opportunities.
Impact
As Kato-san writes, "The dream and vision of Taylor's working In Ishinomaki City were to let students learn global thinking as well as learning English language. The scholarship will remember her dream and vision by providing financial assistance to students to attend the Sendai YMCA College". The first five scholarship students are there now and we plan to add five per year to the two year program. Students now have the opportunity to earn a degree to help themselves, their family and home.
Challenge
Family finances suffered from the disaster throughout the Tohoku region. Many students who would like to go to college have told their families that they will be fine not going to college because they know their family can't afford it. The economic recovery of the area will take many years because of the loss of life, jobs, neighborhood communities and homes. For example, in Ishinomaki 27,000 people will be in temporary housing until 2017 and there are students in need of assistance.
