Solar lanterns for school children in Sri Lanka
Story
All children matter, and none more so than the poor school children of Sri Lanka living in villages without electricity. While they can attend good local schools, without light at night, they cannot do their homework. Education is the path to prosperity in Sri Lanka, but as in many poor countries the economy cannot provide enough good jobs making the job market very competitive. Our solar lights allow these children to compete for a chance at a brighter future.
Impact
The short-term impact is the elimination of the danger of fire due to candles and kerosene lanterns. The long-term impact is not only improved health, but also the primary purpose of this project - to allow children to improve their prospects for the future by providing the clean, safe, and bright light by which they can study.
Challenge
Many villages in Sri Lanka are not connected to the power grid. For those that are, power is intermittent. The alternative is kerosene lanterns. Not only are kerosene fumes a health hazard, but the price of kerosene has risen drastically in recent months. This places an increasing financial burden on already poor and struggling families. And, of course, kerosene, as well as candles, present a significant fire hazard, especially in close-packed villages of flimsy wooden huts.
