Story

We have been working to empower & end the systematic violence against women & girls in India since 1989. We believe every woman & child deserves a life free from inequality, cruelty & discrimination & we stand with them to create the lives they truly deserve. During the pandemic it is women & girls suffering most from restricted movement & freedom & financial burdens faced by families, resulting in dramatic increases in GBV, exploitation & demand for our support.

Impact

Since 1989, we have helped over 200,000 women & children, providing shelter to over 2,000. In 2006, a landmark case prosecuted & gave double life sentences to 20 high profile paedophiles. Together with Malala Fund we have promoted girls' education engaging around 40,000 people. During COVID 19 our Childline team has stopped 110 child marriages - over 40% of rescues in Maharashtra - our adoption center is 20% over capacity & our women's shelter has over 200 new cases.

Challenge

In India, crimes against women are recorded every 3 mins with a 31% increase in rapes since 2010. Every 3rd girl aged 15-19 years is married & every 2nd one of them has given birth. Child marriages in Maharashtra have surged by 78.3% & we are being called to stop even more during the pandemic. Other violence, also on the rise due to COVID, includes; foeticide, infanticide, medical neglect, bride burning, sexual abuse, forced marriage, prostitution & sexual harassment at home & the work place.
