Support for Children with Autism in Tajikistan
Story
"IRODA - Parents of Children with Autism Initiative" is working to establish services and support for people with Autism in Tajikistan. Until very recently in Tajikistan Autism has not been recognized or diagnosed and children and their families have been without appropriate support. IRODA is working towards establishing the necessary services and is striving to see people with Autism treated with dignity and respect as valued members of society.
Impact
The project will enable IRODA to expand it's pioneering work in the field of Autism in Tajikistan to ensure that there is early and appropriate diagnosis and access to necessary services and supports for children and their families. Awareness raising, training and advocacy activities will work towards creating communities that are understanding, supportive and inclusive or people with Autism.
Challenge
Prior to the commencement of IRODA's work in Tajikistan, children with Autism have been frequently misdiagnosed and prescribed inappropriate treatment, which has been detrimental to their development. They have been without access to therapy or educational services that meet their unique needs, and a lack of awareness and misunderstanding in the community has led to children and their families experiencing stigma and isolation. This project will expand IRODA's work addressing these issues
